Battle of Roncesvalles

At the Pass of Roncesvalles in the Pyrenees Mountains, northeast of Pamplona, the rear guard of Charlemagnes's retreating army was massacred by the Basques. This battle forms the basis of the heroic legend of Roland, recounted in The Song of Roland.
